The overall role of the service navigator is to act as a go-between that provides essential information to family or community members on the access to health care and social services. The position incumbent has expertise in the youth protection system, namely its procedures and mechanisms. The service navigator supports, assists and provides guidance to families in their actions with the department of youth protection. He or she goes to medical appointments with patients and their families and can explain procedures of a service in particular, ensuring a smooth transition from one service to another and improving the trust of family members towards the Quebec health system. The position also involves acting as a witness of the families’ journey and rapidly providing crucial information to health professionals in order to “navigate” more efficiently through a continuum of heath care services with health practitioners and Indigenous families.
